Police have seized 66,000 smuggled e-cigarettes worth more than 15 million baht from a warehouse in Uttaradit, northern Thailand, Thai media reported.
The Consumer Protection Police Department (CPPD) and other relevant agencies announced the successful operation at a press conference yesterday.
CPPD officers have been investigating illegal online e-cigarette sellers who disguise their products as cartoon characters to target teenagers. These toy-like e-cigarettes are designed to deceive guardians and attract young buyers.
Investigators contacted the sellers and tracked their financial transactions, finding that the e-cigarette business earned more than 10 million baht per month. The sellers reportedly communicated with customers through online platforms, which posed new challenges for police tracking.
In order to evade arrest, the suspect moved warehouses several times in the past two or three months. Despite this, CPPD was able to track down the warehouse in Uttaradit, which contained 66,000 e-cigarettes and other related equipment worth more than 15 million baht.
The main suspect, Jakkawan, was reportedly arrested based on an arrest warrant and search warrant from the Criminal Court for illegal trafficking of prohibited products such as e-cigarettes and related equipment.
